A New Day is on the Horizon
WE’RE STILL SHOOKETH FROM LAST NIGHT’S OVATION-WORTHY MESSAGE BY THE QUEEN HERSELF, OPRAH WINFREY! SHE FINESSED THE STAGE AND DELIVERED HER SPEECH IN A WAY THAT ONLY THE OPRAH WINFREY COULD.
Oprah was awarded the Cecil B. deMille award for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.” In her eloquent speech, she iterated messages of hope and a new day. In this new day, Oprah claimed women would no longer be the silent victims of sexual harassment, inequality, and injustice. She claimed that the women of today, along with “some pretty phenomenal men,” are leading the way in rewriting the future. In light of the ongoing women’s empowerment movement that is combating sexual harassment in the workplace, especially the entertainment industry, Oprah – along with many other actresses- wore all black in representation of their solidarity and support of the #MeToo campaign.
She told the story of her experience watching television as Sidney Poitier accepted his Oscar award, becoming the first black male to win the coveted accolade. Oprah paralleled that moment of celebration to her acceptance of the Cecil B. deMille award (Oprah is the first black woman to receive this award). She noted that her moment of recognition would resonate similarly with the girls of today – a responsibility she does not take lightly.
Overall, Ms. Winfrey’s message was of encouragement for today and eagerness for tomorrow. She emphasized the importance of acknowledging our past in order to pursue a brighter future. And most of all, she stressed the power of standing in your own truth – “What I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have. And I’m especially proud and inspired by all the women who have felt strong enough and empowered enough to speak up and share their personal stories. Each of us in this room are celebrated because of the stories that we tell, and this year we became the story.”
For any that ever doubted, the future IS female and all that’s left to ask is…
1. Oprah, will you run for President in 2020 and
2. Oprah, will you join us on STRIKE???
